๐Ÿ•ฏ Moshe Rabbeinu – 7th of Adar

February 9, 2022

The following Yahrtzeit edition of JMN is presented by the tremendously talented Rabbi Ezi Wartelsky shlita on his “Yahrtzeit Yomi” WhatsApp group.

Today, the 7th of Adar, is the yahrtzeit of Moshe Rabbeinu, ืขืœื™ื• ื”ืฉืœื•ื. The date of 7 Adar is listed in ืฉืœื—ืŸ ืขืจื•ืš ืื•ืจื— ื—ื™ื™ื ืกื™ืžืŸ ืชืงืดืค among the days upon which: ืดืจืื•ื™ ืœื”ืชืขื ื•ืช ื‘ื”ืืด – โ€œit is appropriate to fast.โ€ (See ืขืจื•ืš ื”ืฉืœื—ืŸ who explains that there is actually no obligation to fast, but it is rather a day on which โ€œit would be appropriate to fast.โ€)

While there are many differing opinions (and customs) as to whether the yahrtzeit is to be observed in Adar Rishon or Adar Sheini (or both), we will follow the ruling of the Terumas Hadeshen, Magen Avraham, Beโ€™er Heitiv, Mishnah Berurah and Aruch Hashulchan that the yahrtzeit is to be observed in Adar Rishon.

After careful consideration, it was ultimately decided that the Yahrtzeit of Moshe Rabbeinu would not be commemorated through the means of the usual Yahrtzeit Yomi audio clip, for the following reasons:

It is one of our hermeneutical Principles of Faith that Moshe Rabbeinu, the penultimate Leader of the Jewish People, and the quintessential and most loyal and most humble ืด,ืขื‘ื“ ื”ืฉืืด was the greatest person to ever exist. From the midrashic account of his passing from this world, it is clear that he reached a level of greatness that was even higher than that of all the angelic and celestial beings.

Hence, it was primarily due to a concern that Moshe Rabbeinu should not be viewed as merely โ€œone of the great Tzaddikim,โ€ that it was decided that there will be no spoken treatise presented about this very greatest of men.

Moreover, any feeble attempt to characterize or describe the greatness of Moshe Rabbeinu will inevitably fall pitifully short of the full grandeur of the supremely elevated and sublime personality of the Man who connected the Creator with the Jewish People forever through the Giving of the Torah.

(The entire Torah, from Parshas Shemos until Parshas Vezos Habracha, is replete with the highest possible forms of effusive praise and complimentary demonstrations of Moshe Rabbeinuโ€™s greatness; even a cursory reading of Chumash with Rashi will obviate why it is referred to by the Navi as ืดืชื•ืจืช ืžืฉื”ืด – โ€œThe Torah of Moshe.โ€)

It was also quickly realized that even a limited discussion regarding the specific topic of the circumstances and events that surrounded the Divinely Ordained death of Moshe Rabbeinu would be beyond the scope of this platform; both in the length of the midrashic narrative, as well as regards the esoteric and mystical nature of the account.

However, in the final analysis, it has been deemed appropriate, and consistent with the normative Yahrtzeit Yomi content, to post the following composition, which is actually an โ€œodeโ€ to Moshe Rabbeinu; the only one that I am aware of in existence (I am not saying that no others have ever existed (the well-known hymn recited by many on Simchas Torah is not an โ€œodeโ€), I am merely saying that I personally am unaware of any ode, other than the following).

With the musical arrangements and composition of the multitalented Moshe Mordechai (Mona) Rosenblum, combined with the unmatched lyrical genius of Lipa Schmeltzer, the following selection is one of my absolute favorites from the last 20 years of Jewish music. It appeared on Mona’s 2003 release of Mona Vol. 4 – Melech and was sung by its lyricist to perfection.

With a unique rhythmic tempo, and concise yet incorporative lyrics, the following Yiddish masterpiece actually expresses through the means of song what the mere spoken word cannot accomplish: the artistic and poignant expression of (our inadequacy to extol) the virtues of the greatest man who ever lived.

The reiterated refrain, ืดื•ื™ืืžื™ื ื• ื‘ื”ืณ ื•ื‘ืžืฉื” ืขื‘ื“ื•ืด which we recite daily at the climax of our morning praise of Hashem, is taken from Shemos 14:30, and expresses the sublime level reached by the Bnei Yisroel as they experienced the prophetic revelations of Krias Yam Suf:
โ€œThey believed in Hashem, and in Moshe His servant.โ€

In the context of observance of Moshe Rabbeinuโ€™s yahrtzeit, the message is as clear as it is fundamental to our most basic principles: oneโ€™s belief in the Supreme Creator is incomplete if it is not complemented by the full belief in His most loyal servant and greatest emissary: Moshe Rabbeinu.

Today’s post has been presented in conjunction with our friends at Yahrtzeit Yomi – a monumental undertaking created to highlight the yahrtzeits of our Torah leaders and the specific dates on the Jewish calendar which carry Jewish historical significance.
