At the end of every Shabbos, as we begin Havdalah and prepare ourselves for yet another week of unknown, we do so by symbolically overflowing our cups with the sweet blessing we hope and pray will fill our lives. With the words that we say each Motzei Shabbos, we confirm our belief in this Divine blessing, while at the same time acknowledging our firm trust in its Source.
Even after ascending to heaven, he continues to advocate on behalf of his nation. A seat of honor is set for him at every bris milah and a cup named for him is poured at the Seder. He is a figure not only of the past, but also of the present and future.
Before we start another worrisome week; before the full weight of the world falls back upon our shoulders, we are reminded of this promise and reinvigorated by the special blessing that belongs to us all, the descendants of Avraham Avinu. It is the promise that no matter what we are about to face, we will survive and thrive – not just that, but we will become great!
