The Yidden proclaimed, וַאֲנִי בְּחַסְדְּךָ בָטַחְתִּי יָגֵל לִבִּי בִּישׁוּעָתֶךָ – My enemies think that there is no one to save me, but I trust in Your infinite kindness, my heart will rejoice in Your salvation. אָשִׁירָה לְהַשֵּׁם כִּי גָמַל עָלָי – I will sing to Hashem because he has dealt kindly with me (Tehillim 13:6)!
A broken heart allows us to be vulnerable. It allows us to see clearly that there is nothing more important than our relationship with the Borei Olam. It enables us to reach up to Him from a place of humility, to admit our dependence on Him and to readily accept His Kingship. It is for these reasons and more that a broken heart is extremely dear and precious to Hashem.
Asaf davens to Hashem to restore Klal Yisroel to the Land – to reestablish His vineyard, to protect it and draw it near to Him once again.
My friends, there was once a time when we were all kings – when we were a nation of holy princes and priests. Yes; we have all tasted the sweetness of royalty and redemption, of purity and prosperity, but… we have fallen. We have been exiled. All the wealth that we once had has since been replaced by cheap substitutes and temporary pleasures… Today we ask ourselves, what can we do to restore what we’ve lost?
In a sincere spirit of optimism, we recite the words of Modim, offering an enthusiastic affirmation of Hashem’s great goodness. We thank Him and consciously accept everything He sends our way – whether or not it fits our ideal of a blissful and carefree existence.
What better way to begin our Shavuos preparations than with a timeless niggun of devotion and faith, united in declaring our readiness to accept Hashem as our One and Only King.
Banim Atem LaMakom – We are all Hashem’s Children. This special tefillah reinforces this powerful idea, and is a timely reminder of the awesome relationship and responsibility that we share with our Father in heaven.
Both the brachos and the klalos are addressed in the plural form – the words of the parsha imploring us to internalize the actuality of our united soul, to understand that we actually NEED each other in order thrive, and thus strive to exhibit genuine kindness and compassion towards our fellow Jew – no matter what.
